BPW and SAF axles are commonly found on the aftermarket in semi-trailers manufactured by Schmitz, Krone, Kögel, Wielton, Zaslaw, and other European manufacturers. Both systems are designed for heavy-duty use but differ in the design of their hubs, brakes, suspension, and maintenance procedures.
It’s not just the axle brand you need to consider. The condition of the bearings, discs, calipers, silent blocks, and air suspension directly determines the carrier’s future expenses.
BPW Axles: Common Parts and Straightforward Repairs
BPW is often chosen for operations in Ukraine due to the widespread availability of components and the large number of service centers familiar with this design. Newer semi-trailers use ECO Plus hubs and ECO Disc brakes, while older models may be equipped with previous-generation components or drum brakes.
According to BPW’s service documentation, inspections of the caliper guides, dust covers, operating clearance, and pressure mechanism are specified for axles and suspensions. For the ECO Disc TS2 system, specific inspections are performed during brake pad replacement, but at least once a year under European operating conditions.

Standard versions are used on curtain-sided trailers, refrigerated trucks, and tankers. A distinctive feature of SAF is the combination of the axle and suspension components into a single unit. How to Inspect a Semi-Trailer’s Axles Before Buying
A thorough inspection helps identify issues that aren’t visible in photos:
Check the nameplates on all axles. The models, allowable loads, and brake types must be compatible. Check the hubs. There should be no play, oil leaks, noise, or significant temperature differences after a test drive. Inspect the brakes. Pay attention to the thickness of the pads and rotors, cracks, signs of overheating, and even wear. Check the calipers. Corroded guide rails cause uneven wear and wheel overheating. Assess the suspension. Check the air springs, shock absorbers, silent blocks, and the operation of the lift axle. Perform an EBS diagnostic check. Faults may be related to ABS sensors, wiring, rings, or modulators. Inspect the tires. Uneven wear often indicates misalignment of the axles.
