Semi-trailer bag: what to do with it after purchase

Tented semi-trailer "bags" are purchased not only for transporting cargo under a tarpaulin. A serviceable chassis can be converted into a platform with sides or a timber trailer. But savings only occur when the buyer checks the frame, running gear and documents before the deal and compares the full cost of the project with ready-made equipment of the required type. A low price does not compensate for cracked side members, deformed cross members and comprehensive repair of axles, brakes and EBS.

When it makes sense to use a semi-trailer as a "bag"

A "bag" has a fixed tarpaulin and is loaded mainly through the rear opening. To access it from the side, the tarpaulin needs to be unlaced or partially removed, which takes more time than working with a curtain-sided semi-trailer. Because of this, on the secondary market "bags" usually cost less than curtain-sided trailers of the same year and condition.

In its original configuration, such a semi-trailer is suitable for pallets, furniture, containers, packaged products and dry building materials loaded via a ramp. If regular access from the side or top is needed, it is better to choose a curtain-sided trailer from the start. The difference is explained in detail in the article "Curtain or bag: which tented semi-trailer to choose".

When conversion makes sense

At the same time, the lower price makes a "bag" an affordable base for conversion into a platform with sides or a timber trailer. In that case, the condition of the tarpaulin is already secondary: before purchase, you should first check the frame, cross members, floor, axles, brakes and EBS. If the semi-trailer will continue to be used under a tarpaulin, you should also assess the tightness of the seal, rear opening and cargo attachment points. The tarpaulin does not replace straps, props and other securing devices, as emphasized by European Commission recommendations.

SolutionWhen to chooseWhat can stop the project
Platform with sidesNeed access by crane or loader from the side and topDamaged frame, unsuitable cross members, missing attachment design
Timber trailerThere is a timber contract and calculated paybackCorrosion, cracks, insufficient frame rigidity, incorrect weight distribution

Platform with sides

Removing the tarpaulin does not yet create a working platform. You need to determine the condition of the flooring and crossbeams, install the front shield, sides and calculated attachment points. After dismantling the frame and installing equipment, the tare changes, and therefore the actual payload capacity. Main side members cannot be drilled, cut or reinforced without an engineering solution. If the body type, purpose or design parameters change, the work falls under the concept of reconfiguration under Article 32 of the Road Traffic Act.

Logging truck

Reconfiguration for a logging truck is more complex because the supports transfer the load to the frame locally. During turns and braking, the structure experiences lateral and longitudinal forces that a tarpaulined body may not have been designed for. The estimate includes frame inspection and calculation, supports with bases, front protective shield, chains or straps and control of weight distribution between the coupling and axles. Rules for the Operation of Wheeled Motor Vehicles establish separate requirements for protective structures when transporting logs. If the frame has cracks, significant corrosion, sagging or non-design welds, it is worth buying a ready-made logging truck.

How to determine if a 'box' is suitable for reconfiguration

1. Check the documents: VIN, body type, permissible masses and loads. 2. Inspect the frame: straightness of side members, crossbeams, axle attachment points and support leg locations. 3. Examine the coupling part: kingpin, plate, support legs and signs of overloading. 4. Diagnose the running gear: hubs, brakes, pneumatic system, EBS and tyres. 5. Obtain a design and estimate: before purchase, not after body removal. The official procedure involves coordinating the planned changes, performing the work, assessing compliance and re-registering the semi-trailer.

How to calculate the cost-effectiveness of purchase

Full cost = semi-trailer price + frame and running gear repair + dismantling + new equipment + approval and certification + delivery and downtime. Before concluding an agreement, you need to obtain a workshop estimate and compare the result with a ready-made platform or timber truck in comparable condition. If the difference does not leave a reserve for hidden defects, re-equipment is economically unjustified. At the time of article publication, the TIRkomis catalog included, in particular, such "bag" listings:

Semi-trailerSpecificationsPrice
Krone2007, 6600 kg, BPW$4000 incl. VAT
Schmitz2008, 6881 kg, SAF$6200 incl. VAT
Schmitz2013, 7200 kg$7999 incl. VAT

Additional market benchmarks are provided in the price review for Schmitz, Krone and Kögel.

What decision to make

  • Keep it as a bag if you have relevant routes and the body and floor don't require significant investment.
  • Make a platform if the chassis is serviceable, open access is needed, and the full estimate is lower than a ready-made equivalent.
  • Re-equip as a timber truck only after frame calculation and if there is stable work.
  • Refuse to buy if frame repair, running gear, EBS, and complete superstructure replacement are needed simultaneously.

At the TIRkomis yard in Rivne, you can compare several semi-trailers and inspect them before purchase. If the needed unit is not available, the manager will help with selection or delivery. Financing options for equipment are also available.

Owners can place a semi-trailer for commission sale: parking space and advertising through the website, Telegram and social media are free until sale. Commission is paid after the sale.
