Refrigerator engine hours: how to assess the resource of a cooling unit

Engine hours show how long the cooling unit has been operating, but do not determine its remaining resource without diagnostics. An aggregate with higher run time and confirmed maintenance history may require less investment than a unit with low readings, a replaced controller, and unknown history.
Before purchasing, you need to check not only the counters, but also cold start, error log, cooling speed, refrigeration circuit and body thermal insulation.
What do refrigerator engine hours mean
Various indicators can be displayed on the controller. In the official Thermo King manual they are categorized as follows:
| Indicator | What it shows | What it helps assess |
|---|---|---|
| Total Run Hours | Total operation in diesel and electric modes | Load on compressor, fans and refrigeration circuit |
| Engine Run Hours | Operation of the unit's diesel engine | Engine wear, fuel system and drive |
| Electric Run Hours | Operation from external power | Unit usage at parking lots and warehouses |
| Controller Power On | Controller activation time | Auxiliary indicator that does not equal unit operation |
To assess the diesel engine, Engine Run Hours are important, but the compressor resource cannot be determined by them alone: the refrigeration circuit operates in Electric Standby mode as well.
The indicators should be compared with the year of installation, service records and operating mode. If the controller was replaced, it is worth clarifying whether previous data were transferred.
How many engine hours is normal for a refrigerator
There is no universal threshold after which Thermo King or Carrier is automatically considered worn out. The load depends on Continuous or Cycle-Sentry mode, temperature settings, door opening frequency, climate and service regularity.
More informative is the average annual run time:
Average annual operating hours = diesel engine hours ÷ number of years in service.
Next, check whether scheduled maintenance was performed. For example, in the documentation for Carrier Vector 1550, injector inspection is scheduled every 1500 hours, fuel pump every 3000 hours, and engine valves every 4000 hours. These are intervals specific to this model, so for another unit you need to use its own service schedule.
How to inspect a Thermo King or Carrier before purchase
- Read controller data. Record diesel, electrical and total engine hours, active and stored fault codes, service reminders and controller replacement history.
- Start the cold engine. A prolonged start, smoke, unstable RPM, strange noises or leaks may indicate problems with the fuel system, engine or compressor drive.
- Perform a Pretrip. The full test is run on a stationary unit: it checks starting, electrical components, cooling, heating and defrost. A PASS result is helpful, but does not replace under-load testing.
- Check cooling performance. Record the ambient air temperature, initial unit temperature, set point and time to reach operating mode. Slow cooling may be related to the compressor, refrigerant, valves, a clogged condenser or heat loss through the box.
- Inspect the circuit and body. Check for oil traces, condition of hoses, belts, fans, evaporator and condenser. On the body, inspect doors, seals, floor, panel joints and signs of moisture ingress.
For international transport, also verify the validity of ATP documents. Current requirements are published by UNECE.
How to assess risk and acceptable price
| Inspection result | Risk | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Engine hours confirmed, service history available, Pretrip passed | Moderate | Compare with price of equivalent working units |
| Low hours, but controller replaced and no history | Increased | Perform separate unit diagnostics |
| Pretrip passed, but unit reaches temperature slowly | High | Check pressures, compressor and seal integrity |
| Emergency fault codes, oil leaks or unstable pressures present | High | Obtain repair estimate before making a deposit |
| Box insulation damaged | High | Assess heat loss independently of unit condition |
It makes sense to calculate the maximum price as follows:
Price of a working analog − confirmed repairs − downtime cost − reserve for hidden defects.
The estimate should be prepared by a service that works with the specific model of the unit. The seller's verbal assessment does not replace compressor, pressure, and performance checks.
Used refrigerator prices
As of the time of writing this article, the TIRKOMIS catalog had 21 refrigerators available, including:
| Refrigerator | Specifications | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Schmitz 2005 | Tare 8390 kg, yard in Rivne | $8 000 |
| Schmitz 2003 | Tare 9000 kg, SAF axles | $9 499 |
| Lamberet 2010 | Tare 8500 kg, BPW axles | $13 500 + VAT |
The year and price of the semi-trailer do not indicate the condition of the refrigeration unit. Before inspection, you should request the model of the unit, diesel and electric motor hours, photos of the controller, Pretrip results, and the date of the last service. Equipment at the yard in Rivne can be inspected, the unit connected, and sent for diagnostics.
If the semi-trailer type is not yet determined, compare tent and refrigerator for transportation. Buyers who lack the full amount should consider credit or financial leasing.
The owner can place the refrigerator on TIRkomis consignment lot. Parking space and advertising are free until the sale, and commission is paid after the sale.
