How to Sell a Broken-Down Truck Unit

An engine or transmission failure doesn't mean the tractor unit needs to be repaired at any cost or immediately dismantled. To sell a faulty tractor unit with minimal losses, first determine whether it can be sold as a complete unit, and only then choose between commission sales, export, or selling for parts.

What defects are critical for normal sale

Normal sale is the sale of a complete tractor unit, not individual components. Demand is reduced most by defects that make it impossible to start the machine, test it on the road, or load it:

  • seized engine, cracked block, coolant in oil;
  • transmission won't engage gears, has mechanical noise or is partially disassembled;
  • pneumatic system won't build pressure, brakes won't release, wheels are locked;
  • frame is deformed or cracked, VIN location is damaged;
  • after fire or flooding, wiring and control units are damaged;
  • engine, transmission, control units, catalytic converter or other expensive components are missing.

SCR/AdBlue errors, air leaks, faulty starter or actuator don't necessarily need to be fixed before sale. But without a service centre report, the buyer will assess the repair based on the most expensive scenario.

To sell a tractor unit with a faulty engine, prepare a video of a cold start or start attempt, photos of the engine bay, inspection results and a list of removed parts. Major overhaul is justified only if there is a written quote, parts are available, and the projected price increase exceeds the cost of repair, delivery and downtime.

Three options for selling a faulty tractor unit

Commission sale

Commission sales are suitable for a complete machine with a readable VIN and registration documents. The best scenario is a tractor unit that starts, runs and has a localized defect that can be shown during inspection. The owner agrees on the price and bid limits, and TIRkomis photographs and advertises the equipment, takes calls and conducts viewings. Parking and advertising prior to sale are free.

For commission sales or quick purchase, the owner doesn't organize repeat viewings. If there's no time to wait for a buyer, the manager will check the possibility of purchasing the machine in its current condition.

Export

Export should be considered for a complete and repairable tractor of an older generation that sells slowly in Ukraine. Among the models that TIRkomis receives inquiries for are Renault Magnum and Premium, DAF XF and CF, MAN TGA, Mercedes-Benz Actros and Axor. However, the brand itself does not guarantee a deal: the export buyer agrees on the year, environmental standard, completeness, defect and loading method.

Selling commercial vehicles to Africa begins with an assessment by VIN, photos and video. Therefore, a non-functional tractor does not need to be transported to Rivne until the buyer has confirmed interest and preliminary conditions.

Disassembly for spare parts

Disassembly is considered after a fire, critical frame damage or loss of major assemblies. Before dismantling, get quotes for the complete vehicle: after selling the engine or transmission, it will be harder to sell the tractor as a whole.

Selling spare parts requires space, dismantling, separate listings and a buyer for each component. Some parts may remain unsold, so factor in the costs of disassembly, advertising and disposal.

Which option is best for you

  • The tractor starts and moves, the defect is localized: commission sale with an open description of the fault or repair with a confirmed estimate.
  • The vehicle is not roadworthy, but complete: remote assessment for export and verification of a quick buyout offer.
  • An older model has weak demand in Ukraine, but is suitable for repair: search for an export buyer before delivery to the lot.
  • The frame is critically damaged, the vehicle is burnt out or major assemblies are missing: compare selling as a complete unit versus disassembly.

For a preliminary assessment, send the VIN, model, year, environmental standard, photos from all sides, startup video, description of the fault, garage estimate and information about loading availability. Assessment of commercial vehicles before sale should take into account the price of a working equivalent, repair, delivery and the risk of hidden defects. The Methodology for assessing wheeled vehicles is applied for an official report.

At the TIRkomis lot, the engine, transmission, electronics and pneumatic system can be tested at the TIR-service Renamax. The buyer sees confirmed defects, and the owner does not arrange a separate diagnostic.

Before the deal, prepare the registration certificate, owner documents, representative's power of attorney, and service invoices. The VIN must be readable, and arrest warrants and restrictions need to be checked in advance. The HSC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs explains which contracts are accepted during re-registration.

Send the VIN and photos to the TIRkomis manager. The specialist will check whether it is advisable to sell the tractor unit through the commission, offer it to an export buyer, or prepare it for dismantling, and will explain the requirements for delivery and documents.
