DAF tractor units – features and specifications

DAF trucks are known for their reliability and fuel efficiency. Latest-generation diesel engines, improved suspension, and other technical characteristics make DAF trucks an ideal choice for companies engaged in freight transport.
Development history: the country that makes DAF trucks

DAF was founded in 1928 by engineer Hubert J. van Doorne in the city of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Initially the company was engaged in manufacturing trailers and semi-trailers.
In 1948 the company released its first trucks under the DAF brand. These were the DT 5 and DT10 models, which were mostly used for domestic transport within the country.
In 1955 DAF became one of the pioneers in developing diesel engines for trucks. A year later the company introduced the first truck with an automatic transmission, which was practically a breakthrough in the trucking industry. The company continued to develop and implement new technologies, such as the anti-lock braking system. In the 1960s DAF began exporting its products beyond the Netherlands: to Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This contributed to the company's further growth and development.
In 1975 the company sold its passenger-vehicle division to the Swedish concern Volvo. However, just 5 years later the company faced financial difficulties and was forced to turn to the state for help. A second crisis came in the second half of the 90s, when the Dutch manufacturer sold its automotive division to the American concern Paccar. The corporation continued developing the brand, and today DAF is one of the leading European manufacturers of heavy and medium trucks.
Design features
DAF trucks have a number of distinctive features. First and foremost are the engines, known for their fuel efficiency and strict compliance with all environmental standards.
Second is the manual and automatic transmissions from ZF or Eaton, or AS Tronic. Some models also feature a hydromechanical gearbox.
The third factor is DAF Connect technology. This is a vehicle monitoring and management system offered by DAF Trucks. It gives owners information about the operation and condition of their vehicles. The system allows you to:
- monitor fuel consumption and identify opportunities for fuel savings;
- get warnings about the need for maintenance and regular inspections;
- track the truck's location in real time;
- analyze the driver's driving style; and receive warnings about possible malfunctions or vehicle issues.
The fourth feature is the excellent cab ergonomics, which guarantee driving comfort and driver safety. The latter is also ensured by ABS, VSC systems, and the emergency brake assist option.
Key specifications of the DAF tractor unit
Technical specifications make DAF tractor units some of the most reliable trucks in Europe.

Cab. Excellent ergonomics, well-thought-out comfort, and safety are the hallmarks of the Dutch brand's truck cabs. A clear dashboard interface simplifies driving, the enlarged windshield guarantees improved visibility, and the comfortable seats adjust for height, backrest tilt, and reach.
The manufacturer offers three cab options:
- Day – 1.6 m high, no sleeper berth;
- Sleep – with one sleeping berth;
- Space – 2.2 m high, with two sleeper berths.
A red light filter is fitted to protect against glare when the lights are on. The dashboard is protected against liquid ingress.
Body. The manufacturer's lineup includes vans, all-metal bodies, flatbed trucks, refrigeration units, and tankers.
Chassis. The chassis includes a sturdy frame, diesel (less often gas) engines, the transmission (mostly manual), the braking system, the frame, and balancing mechanisms. DAF truck frames are known for their strength and reliability.
Braking system. Ventilated disc brakes are fitted on the front and rear wheels. Ventilation allows for more efficient heat dissipation, which is especially important for trucks operating under heavy loads. It also reduces the risk of failures, improves braking stability, and lowers the degree of disc overheating.

Engines. DAF trucks are in most cases fitted with PACCAR MX diesel engines. The displacement range of the power units varies from 10.8 to 12.9 liters. Models with the MX-11 and MX-13 designations offer power output from 290 to 530 hp. All engines meet Euro-6 emissions standards and stand out for their high torque characteristics and fuel efficiency.
The technological package includes:
- SCR technology – selective catalytic reduction, which allows exhaust gases to be neutralized by breaking them down into nitrogen and water;
- EGR system – a technology in which part of the exhaust gases is routed back into the engine's intake tract, which reduces the percentage of harmful gases released into the atmosphere.
Transmission. The trucks are mostly fitted with 6- to 16-speed manual gearboxes from ZF or Eaton. An AS Tronic automated gearbox or a hydromechanical transmission can be installed to order.
Suspension. DAF trucks are most often equipped with independent front suspension and dependent rear suspension. Independent front suspension provides better road grip, improving driver comfort, especially on poor roads. Dependent rear suspension provides vehicle stability when carrying loads.
Mirrors. The increased area of the double side mirrors significantly improves visibility, while also increasing the driving safety of tractor units and trucks.
Exterior design of the DAF tractor unit

Large, medium, and light-duty DAF trucks are clearly visible on the road. The smooth lines of the cab, the wide radiator grille, and the enlarged windshield all set these trucks apart from the competition. The cab, which is increased in height with the headlights positioned in its upper section, looks especially striking.
Model lineup
The manufacturer's lineup covers many models. The three base series are the most well known.

The heavy-duty XF series. Known for their performance, reliability, and ease of handling. The models are fitted with PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 diesel engines, with power output from 105 to 510 hp. The transmission is a 6-speed manual or a 12-speed automatic.
The cab features climate control, an air-suspended driver's seat, an air filtration system, a fridge, and a microwave oven.
The safety system includes a directional stability option, an anti-skid function, and hill-start assist. Trucks in this series are often used for long international haulage.

DAF CF – medium-duty trucks. Produced since the early 90s of the last century. Fitted with PACCAR PX-7, 11, or 13 engines with power output from 360 to 510 hp. Displacement ranges from 6.67 to 12.9 L. The transmission is automatic or manual. Less often a hydromechanical 5-speed transmission (to order). Three cab options.
Features:
- improved transmission;
- low operating costs;
- used both within the region and on international routes;
- fuel-saving function.

Light-duty DAF LF trucks. Trucks in this series are designed mainly for urban transport. The vehicles are fitted with Paccar FR and GR engines. The transmission is a 5, 6, or 9-speed automatic. An automatic gearbox can be fitted to order. Two cab options. 6 mirrors, an enlarged windshield.
The safety system includes an adaptive cruise control option, a collision warning system, and directional stability.
How the DAF tractor unit performs in different conditions
DAF tractor units are known for their high efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions, thanks to modern technology, a well-thought-out design, and reliability. Their powerful engines deliver optimal performance both on flat terrain and on mountain roads, all while keeping fuel consumption economical. The cab's aerodynamic design helps reduce air resistance, which has a positive effect on fuel efficiency even at high speeds. Thanks to adaptive suspensions and innovative control systems, these tractor units show excellent stability and maneuverability on various types of surfaces, including dirt roads.
DAF offers a high level of driver comfort, which is an important factor during long hauls in difficult climate conditions. Climate control and cab thermal insulation systems provide comfort both in hot weather and at low temperatures. In addition, advanced safety systems, such as adaptive cruise control, help reduce risks when driving on slippery roads or in conditions of limited visibility.
Thus, DAF tractor units demonstrate stable performance regardless of operating conditions, ensuring efficiency, comfort, and safety at every stage of the transport process.
