Tractor unit-MEGA: how to distinguish factory-made from retrofitted

A tractor unit on MEGA suspension works with a low-frame semi-trailer Mega, which makes it possible to achieve an internal height of about 3 m without exceeding the permissible height of the road train. However, the "Mega" marking in the advertisement does not mean that the machine has a factory Low Deck configuration.
On the secondary market, factory-made low-frame tractor units and standard machines with reduced fifth-wheel height are sold. Before purchase, you need to establish the origin of the configuration, measure the working height of the fifth wheel, and verify compatibility with the specific semi-trailer.
What does Low Deck mean in a tractor unit-MEGA
The key parameter is the height of the fifth-wheel coupling in the transport position, not the wheel size itself. For example, the factory DAF XF Low Deck has a fifth-wheel height of 910 mm with low-profile tyres and 140 mm ground clearance. The semi-trailer manufacturer KRONE indicates that an internal height of Mega Liner 3000 mm can be achieved with a coupling height of 915 or 885 mm — depending on the semi-trailer front configuration.
Therefore, before forming a combination, the fifth-wheel height of the tractor unit, the coupling height of the semi-trailer, tyre profile, ground clearance, and total height of the loaded road train are compared.
How factory-made Low Deck differs from a retrofitted tractor unit
A factory-made Low Deck is created as a single configuration: low-profile tyres, low fifth wheel, corresponding frame and suspension geometry, factory ECAS parameters and chassis component layout. This configuration is verified by VIN, completion card and option codes.
In a retrofitted tractor unit, the height can be reduced by installing different tyres, fifth wheel or brackets, as well as by changing air suspension parameters. This does not necessarily make the machine unsuitable, but requires verification of geometry and documents.
| Criterion | Factory Low Deck | Reconfigured tractor unit |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Confirmed by VIN and configuration sheet | Data on modifications performed needed |
| Geometry | Calculated by manufacturer | Depends on reconfiguration method |
| ECAS | Factory parameters | Calibration check required |
| Ground clearance | Known for standard configuration | Measured on site |
| Mega compatibility | Provided by manufacturer | Confirmed by measurements and coupling |
Improper lowering can cause insufficient ground clearance, air suspension operation outside the standard range, semi-trailer contact with fenders or frame, and speedometer error after wheel diameter change.
If the changes affect the vehicle structure, you must verify the approval report, certificate of conformity, and re-registration. The registration procedure is explained by the HSC MIA.
How to inspect a tractor-MEGA before purchase
- Decode the VIN. Cross-check the factory modification, suspension type, original tyre size, and chassis execution.
- Measure the fifth wheel height. The tractor must stand on a level surface with ECAS in transport position.
- Check ground clearance. Inspect the lower frame points, tanks, exhaust system, and suspension travel reserve.
- Perform ECAS and EBS diagnostics. Check level sensors, valves, fault codes, and calibration.
- Couple the tractor to the semi-trailer. Assess coupling height, wheel clearances, front-end turn, and landing gear position.
- Cross-check documents. Actual tyres, fifth wheel, and suspension must match factory specification or reconfiguration documents.
The general condition of the engine, gearbox, frame, and brakes can be preliminarily assessed using the used truck inspection algorithm in 30 minutes.
Which tractor-MEGA to choose
A factory Low Deck is more suitable for regular work with a Mega semi-trailer: its geometry is easier to verify, and compatibility can be checked through documentation. A reconfigured tractor unit may cost less, but makes sense only with correct geometry, functional ECAS, and properly registered modifications.
| Tractor unit | Specifications | Location | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAF XF 105.460 | 2007, 460 hp, manual, Mega marking | Lot, Rivne | $8 500 |
| Renault Premium 460 DXI | 2011, 460 hp, automatic, Euro 5, Mega marking | Online | $10 000 |
The Mega marking on the listing describes the tractor unit's intended use, but does not confirm the factory configuration. Before a deal, TIRkomis will help verify the vehicle's parameters, compare offers, and arrange an inspection.
The owner can place the tractor unit on a consignment lot in Rivne: parking space and advertising are free until sale, and a commission is paid after the sale.
