Truck insurance: CASCO, MTPL and the "Green Card"
Truck insurance comes down to three different policies for three different risks. One is mandatory by law, the other two are a matter of common sense. Here is a quick rundown of each.
MTPL — mandatory third-party liability
Covers the damage your vehicle causes to others. You cannot drive at all without it. For trucks the rate is higher than for passenger cars, depending on the weight and the region of registration.
CASCO — protection for the vehicle itself
A voluntary policy covering accidents that are your fault, theft, fire or natural disasters. For commercial vehicles, insurers require a GPS tracker and often a 1-3% deductible. If the tractor unit is on a loan or under leasing, CASCO will be a mandatory condition set by the bank. A tip: compare not the price of the policy, but the list of exclusions.
"Green Card" — for trips abroad
The international equivalent of third-party liability, without which you will not be allowed into the EU. It is issued for a month or a year - for regular international runs the annual one is far more cost-effective. It is arranged in a single day and only requires the vehicle registration certificate.
