STAS Tipper with mileage: what to check before buying

STAS is valued for its spacious body and low tare weight, but the year of manufacture says little about the condition of the tipper. Before deciding to buy a tipper, you need to assess the body, hydraulics, rear gate and suspension as a single structure.
Which STAS is right for your cargo
On the secondary market, triaxle aluminium tippers of approximately 45–60 m³ for grain are most commonly sought. There are also compact steel bodies for sand and crushed stone and large-capacity versions for light cargo.
In the current STAS line Agrostar has a body capacity of 30.1–79.1 m³, Buildstar — 27–58.8 m³, and the steel U-Rockstar — 25.9–33.4 m³. For older models, specifications should be checked against the data plate and documents.
Volume does not equal payload capacity. For grain, low tare weight and tightness are important, for crushed stone — floor wear resistance. Aluminium body reduces tare weight, but for constant work with abrasive materials, sufficient floor thickness and protection of high-impact zones are needed.
Body geometry and repair marks
Inspection begins on level ground. The sides should be parallel, the rear portal — without skew, and the body — lying flat on the frame. A wavy floor, deformed crossmembers or uneven gaps may indicate overloading or overturning.
Pay special attention to:
- attachment points of the hydraulic cylinders and body to the frame;
- crossmembers, front wall and rear hinges;
- joints of aluminium with steel parts;
- cracks, patches and rewelding.
A repair weld is not an automatic reason for rejection. It is important to establish the cause of the repair, check for crack propagation and geometry. Fresh paint should not hide bare metal.
Hydraulics and tailgate
An empty body must be fully raised and lowered on a solid, level surface. The cylinder should operate smoothly, without jerking, lateral deflection or leakage. Check pins, bushings, fasteners, hoses and fittings. Never enter under a raised body without proper support.
On the tailgate 'valve/door', check the hinges, locks, pneumatic actuator, seals and even pressure. Verify the hydraulic connections, pressure and oil flow with the tractor unit: the 'hydraulics' label does not guarantee compatibility. To assess the tractor as part of a combination, use the separate article on IVECO Stralis with mileage.
Axles, brakes and residual service life
Used STAS semi-trailers are equipped with BPW, SAF, ROR and Mercedes axles. What matters is not the logo, but the actual condition and the ability to accurately identify the modification.
Check the play and noise in wheel hubs, air suspension, shock absorbers, lift axle, brakes and evenness of tyre wear. After a ride, wheel hubs should not differ significantly in temperature. ABS/EBS errors are read with diagnostics: WABCO System Diagnostics supports trailer systems.
Calculate residual service life using a repair estimate: tyres, brake components, wheel hubs, air suspension, hydraulics and body repair. If the costs bring the total price close to a better-condition Benalu, Schmitz or Wielton, a cheaper STAS is no longer a better deal.
Where to buy or sell STAS
At the TIRkomis auction lot in Rivne, you can come and compare a large selection of semi-trailers by body condition, axles and specifications. At the time of writing, the listings included:

Price and status may change. To clarify STAS availability or select a tipper for a specific cargo, call the manager: +380 97 102 65 55. New arrivals are also published in the Telegram channel TIRkomis.
The owner may hand over the tipper for consignment sale: parking space and advertising are free until sale, the listing is distributed through numerous information channels, and commission is paid after successful sale.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which STAS volume to choose for grain?
A universal segment is approximately 45–60 m³, but the final choice depends on the crop density, the semi-trailer tare, and the permissible gross vehicle weight.
Can you buy STAS after welding the body?
Yes, if the cause of damage is established, the weld is executed properly, the crack is not developing, and the body and frame geometry is preserved.
How to check the hydraulic cylinder?
Raise the empty body on a level solid surface and check the smoothness of movement, leakage, condition of sections and fastenings. Testing under load is conducted only in compliance with safety rules.
Which axles are better — BPW or SAF?
Both options are common and maintainable. For a used tipper, the actual condition of the wheel hubs, brakes and suspension, parts availability, and absence of EBS errors are more important.
