Semi-trailer tanker or fuel truck: what to choose

Semi-trailer tankers and fuel trucks transport petroleum products, and with appropriate equipment, they enable their delivery. However, this equipment is designed for different logistics: a semi-trailer is suitable for large batches and long-distance routes, a fuel truck — for delivering fuel to multiple locations.

The choice starts not with price or tank volume, but with the route, number of unloading points, access roads and type of petroleum product.

Main differences

ParameterSemi-trailer tankerFuel truck
Typical workRoutes between oil depots, terminals and petrol stationsDelivery to farms, enterprises, construction sites
Cargo batchLarge volumes in one tripSmaller batches to multiple addresses
ManoeuvrabilityRequires space to turn the combinationMore convenient in limited territory
OperationTractor and tanker can be replaced separatelyChassis and tank form one vehicle

It is worth buying a semi-trailer tanker if the company transports large batches, has a suitable tractor and operates on routes with normal access roads. A fuel truck is more appropriate for delivering fuel to multiple locations, working on farms, quarries and construction sites.

How to calculate the required tank capacity

The geometric volume of the tank does not equal the amount of fuel that can be legally transported:

Permissible cargo mass = permitted total mass of the vehicle or combination − its actual unladen mass.

The result is compared with fuel density, tank section capacity and permissible axle load. Therefore, a 38 m³ tanker cannot always be completely filled. Sections allow batches to be divided and multiple deliveries to be made in one trip. At the same time, each additional section means more baffles, valves and drain lines that require servicing.

Absence of a factory plate, mismatch of the number with documents, cracks, leaks or tank repair without confirmation — grounds to halt the deal until expert inspection. External inspection does not replace tightness testing.

You also need to establish what substances were transported previously. Tank cleaning and its suitability for the planned fuel depend on this. General risks are described in the article on checking documents when buying commercial vehicles.

Which ADR requirements to consider

Petrol, diesel fuel and other petroleum products have different UN numbers and transport conditions. The cargo determines the tank code, vehicle category, marking and equipment. The word «ADR» in an ad does not confirm the suitability of the vehicle for any fuel. Requirements are defined by ADR 2025, and in Ukraine the Law on the Transport of Dangerous Goods also applies.

For a semi-trailer, an ADR tractor unit with the required approval category is selected separately, including FL or AT. In the combination, the documents of the tractor and semi-trailer are checked; for a fuel tanker truck — approval of the complete vehicle. The procedure for obtaining a certificate of approval is determined by the HSC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The driver must have a valid DOPNV certificate with the appropriate specialization. The price of a fuel tank semi-trailer and a fuel tanker truck cannot be compared directly: in the latter case, the buyer receives a tank together with a power chassis. You should also factor in diagnostics, equipment restoration and ADR certification.

Equipment in Rivne can be inspected before the deal, and viewing of online offers is agreed with the owner. If needed, you can find out how to buy commercial vehicles if you don't have enough funds.

The owner of a used tank can consign it to the TIRkomis commission lot. Parking space and advertising are free until the sale. Commission is paid after the sale: up to $20 000 — $500, from $20 000 inclusive — 3% of the deal price. Detailed terms are explained in the article about consignment sales of commercial vehicles.
