Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845: who is this tractor unit suitable for

Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845 is a long-haul tractor unit for international and inter-city transport. The designation '1845' indicates an 18-tonne chassis class and power of around 450 hp. The typical 4×2 version is equipped with a 12.8-litre OM471 producing 449 hp and 2200 N·m, and a 12-speed automated PowerShift 3 gearbox. Such specifications are also provided in Mercedes-Benz official materials for Actros Euro 5.
At the same time, the 1845 index does not confirm the environmental standard: Euro 5 and Euro 6 versions exist on the market. Before purchasing, you must verify the VIN, factory data sheet, documents and the actual exhaust treatment system.
What transport is the Actros 1845 suitable for
The power of 449 hp is sufficient for a standard long-haul combination with a curtainsider, refrigerated unit or container carrier. The model performs best on long routes, where traction reserve, automated gear shifting and a full-size sleeper cab are important. Consider the Actros 1845 if: - your main work is inter-city or international haulage; - you need a universal 4×2 tractor unit for a standard semi-trailer; - the route has hills and descents, and the vehicle is equipped with a retarder; - there is a Mercedes Xentry service nearby with access to spare parts. It is better to look for a different configuration if the tractor unit will work in a quarry, off-road, with constant overloading, or on routes requiring 6×2 or 6×4. Euro 5 should also not be purchased for a contract that explicitly requires Euro 6.
Weak points and inspection of Actros 1845
| Node | Sign and check | Risk level |
|---|---|---|
| OM471 Fuel system | Prolonged cold start, uneven running; check injector corrections and rail pressure | High if pressure is unstable or misfires occur |
| Turbine and intake | Loss of power, whistling, oil in pipes; check boost and sealing | Pipe — negotiable, turbine — quotation before purchase |
| PowerShift 3 | Delays, shocks, jerks; read clutch wear, actuator errors and calibration | High with mechanical noise or gear slip |
| SCR/AdBlue | Crystallization, NOx errors, power limitation; check pressure and dosage | Negotiable only after identifying the faulty node |
| Cooling | Level drop, unstable temperature; pressure-test the system | Critical if gases in tank or fluid mixing |
| Pneumatics, EBS, ECAS | Slow pressure rise or drop, brake and suspension errors | Brake faults — reason to defer the deal |
The inspection starts with a cold start, followed by Xentry diagnostics, gearbox testing during start-up, maneuvering and shifts, checking the retarder, frame, fifth wheel and even tire wear. The basic sequence is provided by a checklist for inspecting a used truck in 30 minutes.
After inspection, a quotation for work before the first trip is drawn up. A local leak or known clutch remainder is an argument for negotiation. Unstable fuel pressure, mechanical gearbox noise, gases in the cooling system or active EBS errors require in-depth diagnostics before the deal.
Price, liquidity and sales to Africa
At the time of publication, the TIRkomis catalog contained the following listings:
| Actros 1845 | Characteristics | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Euro 5, 1,000,000 km, automatic, online | $18,500 |
| 2012 | 738,000 km, automatic, hydraulics, ADR, platform | $18,500 |
Identical price does not mean identical value: after diagnostics, the difference in investments may exceed the initial negotiation sum.
For sale in Ukraine, the owner can bring the tractor unit to the TIRkomis consignment lot in Rivne. Parking space and advertising on the website, Telegram and social media are free until sold. Buyers can inspect the truck, conduct diagnostics and finalize the deal on site. The commission is $500 per unit sold and is paid only after the sale.
The Actros 1845 Euro 5 can also be offered to buyers in Africa. TIRkomis works with Mercedes-Benz Actros and Axor below Euro 6, but the acceptable year, condition and environmental standard are checked according to the requirements of the destination country. The difference in import rules is explained by a UNECE study on used vehicle exports. TIRkomis helps find a buyer, agree on price, prepare documents and organize delivery of equipment to Africa.
