Hamm – the leader in the road roller market

Hamm-branded equipment has firmly established itself on our roads as well. Today it is hard to imagine building highways or city roads without it. Hamm rollers mean quality, innovative technology, high productivity and increased wear resistance. They stand out for their adaptability to work in any climate conditions and low operating and repair costs.
Milestones in Hamm's technical development
The history of one of the world's leading manufacturers of road compaction equipment, Hamm, spans more than 130 years. In 1878 in Germany, in Tirschenreuth, brothers Anton and Franz Hamm decided to open the machine-building company Gebr. Hamm. Initially it specialized in manufacturing agricultural equipment. By the end of the 19th century, the plant's products, thanks to their high quality, had won popularity and success among farmers in Germany. At the start of the 20th century, sensing the trend of the times, the company decided to set up production of road rollers – in those years this type of equipment saw increased demand. Unlike competing firms that produced steam road rollers, the plant entered the market with a new product: in 1911 Hamm built the first roller with a motor drive. At the same time, the company continued producing and selling agricultural machinery. Only starting in 1928 were all efforts directed toward developing and manufacturing road rollers. To this end, the factory workshops were re-equipped and production capacity was increased.

In 1932, Alois Hamm received a patent for a genuinely revolutionary invention – tandem rollers with all drums both driven and steerable. In 1940, the company developed the first tandem roller with an offset drum. In the 1950s, Hamm began actively selling its products in other countries, gradually gaining its share of this market segment. In 1963, the company became the world's first manufacturer of an all-wheel-drive pneumatic road roller. From 1983, Hamm began producing vibratory rollers.
From 1992, as a result of cooperation with Wirtgen, alongside rollers the plant also began producing other road equipment – hydrostatic soil stabilizers and soil recycling machines.
From 1999, Hamm became part of the Wirtgen Group, together with Vögele and Wirtgen. Today, more than 80 models of equipment for road construction and earthworks are produced under the Hamm brand. The company remains a leader in road roller manufacturing, offering a diverse model range: from soil, combination, and tandem rollers of the HD and DV types, to pneumatic-tire rollers (with automatic tire inflation systems).

Key criteria for choosing a roller
The main purpose of a roller is to create a strong, dense base layer under various types of surfaces. Today there is wide demand for single-drum vibratory soil rollers, capable of providing quality compaction of the subgrade for roads, railways, airfields and other transport structures.
The quality and reliability of soil compaction (absence of subsidence), as well as the cost per unit of earthworks, depend on how correctly the equipment was chosen. One of the most important qualities of rollers is traversability. Equipment often has to work on steep slopes, hard-to-access areas, or entirely on soggy clay soil. Among the technical parameters to consider are:
- working speed;
- engine power;
- working width.
It is extremely important that the machine can transmit enormous compaction energy to hard-to-reach parts of the working surface. HAMM-made equipment handles this and many other complex tasks excellently.
The universally recognized uniqueness of Hamm soil rollers with five compaction frequencies and heavy asphalt vibratory rollers with 8 amplitudes allows selecting the conditions best suited to compaction, taking into account specific materials, layer thickness, and work output. Hamm rollers can be equipped with drum impulse counters (Impact Meter) and compaction quality control systems (Compact Meter). Asphalt roller models HD and DV have the highest amplitudes and frequencies in the industry, automatic speed control to maintain the operator-selected distance between drum impulses (guaranteeing rolling evenness), automatic water flow control depending on roller speed, vibration automatics that fully duplicate the main backup irrigation system, a rotating cab to ensure optimal rolling speed, and an automatic irrigation system.
