Euro 6 in plain terms: what you're paying for

Euro 6 isn't just a sticker on the cab — it's real money: in the price of the vehicle, in road tolls across Europe, and in maintenance costs. Here's the explanation, without the chemistry and formulas.

What it actually is

The emissions class defines how much pollution an engine is allowed to put out. Euro 6 is the strictest standard currently in force for trucks: compared with Euro 5, nitrogen oxide emissions are cut roughly fivefold. This is achieved with SCR systems (AdBlue injection) and a DPF particulate filter.

How the class affects your costs

  • Road tolls: in Germany, Austria and most EU countries the rate for Euro 6 is noticeably lower than for Euro 5 — on regular routes the difference adds up to thousands of euros a year.
  • City access: the low-emission zones of major EU cities are closed to older classes, or charge a fee.
  • Running costs: AdBlue adds to your operating costs, but the fuel savings on modern engines usually more than cover it.
  • Vehicle price: Euro 6 costs more on the used market — that's the price of access to the routes and lower tolls.

The takeaway is simple: if you're planning international work, Euro 6 pays for itself. For domestic haulage, Euro 5 is still a workable option with a lower entry price. We keep both in the yard — a manager will advise you based on your route.
