DAF XF 105 or MAN TGX Euro 5: Which Should a Carrier in Ukraine Choose

The DAF XF 105 and MAN TGX Euro 5 are popular among Ukrainian carriers: there are many of them on the used market, these models are well-known at TIR service centers, and spare parts are relatively easy to find. To determine whether the DAF XF 105 or the MAN TGX would be more cost-effective for domestic operations, let’s compare their engines, transmissions, cabs, typical repairs, and current prices.

Which model years and power ratings are we comparing?

The DAF XF 105 was produced from 2005 to 2013. In Euro 5 versions, the most common engine is the 12.9-liter PACCAR MX with 410, 460, or 510 k.s. On the used market, the XF 105.460 is the most common.

The first generation of the MAN TGX debuted in 2007. Among Euro 5 tractor trucks, the 18.440, 18.480, and 18.540 models are common. The TGX 18.440 can be equipped with a 10.5-liter D20 or a 12.4-liter D26 engine, while the 480 and 540 k. s. versions were equipped with the D26. An analysis of the tractor’s specifications explains what the numbers in the model name mean and how to match power to payload.

Engine: PACCAR MX vs. MAN D26

The DAF XF 105 is equipped with a 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13. Key inspection points include the fuel system, turbocharger, air compressor, and the integrity of the cooling and lubrication systems.

The MAN D26 has a displacement of 12.4 L, a Common Rail system, and a power output of 440–540 k. s.

Transmission: AS-Tronic vs. TipMatic

The DAF AS-Tronic and MAN TipMatic are automated manual transmissions. Both feature a dry clutch, a gear selector mechanism, and an actuator, so the components prone to failure are nearly identical.

The AS-Tronic is tested for delay when engaging forward and reverse gears, jerks during takeoff, and actuator errors. The TipMatic is evaluated using the same criteria: smoothness of takeoff, shifting under load, remaining clutch life, and calibration accuracy. The difference between manual and automated transmissions is explained in more detail in a comparison of trucks with automatic and manual transmissions.

In terms of design, neither transmission has an unquestionable advantage. An AS-Tronic with smooth shifting and no errors is more advantageous than a TipMatic with a worn clutch; a fully functional TipMatic is more advantageous than a DAF with a faulty actuator.

Cab: Super Space Cab vs. MAN XXL

The DAF Space Cab has a lower roof and is suitable for shorter trips. The Super Space Cab is designed for international transport: the XF 105 technical specifications, the height above the engine tunnel is listed as 210 cm, and it features two sleeping berths and spacious storage compartments.

The MAN XLX is more compact, while the XXL also has a cabin height of about 210 cm, a nearly level floor, and two sleeping berths. Its advantage lies in the layout of the work area around the driver; the DAF Super Space Cab offers a greater sense of space and more storage capacity. For a single driver on regional routes, the Space Cab or XLX is sufficient; for a crew on international routes, it’s worth comparing the Super Space Cab and the XXL.

Typical Repairs and Financial Risks

On the DAF XF 105, the most significant expenses may arise from a combination of PACCAR MX engine repairs with clutch replacement or AS-Tronic actuator replacement. The compressor, oil and coolant leaks, AdBlue pump, and emissions system sensors should be checked separately.

On the MAN TGX, the main risks come from the D26 injectors, the turbocharger, insufficient oil pressure, the TipMatic, and the SCR/AdBlue system. Additionally, the EBS, pneumatics, and cab electronics should be inspected. A complete list of the model’s weak points is included in the MAN TGX Euro 5 review.
